An impeachment rant

I’m trying to detach from the news and all things impeachment. It’s not that I don’t care. Of course, I care. But it’s no secret I loathe Trump and all he stands for, and I just don’t see the Senate holding him accountable for anything. For every new piece of evidence of his misdeeds, there’s one more excuse.

It reminds me of when we came back to the United States after living in Cairo. We had moved to South Carolina, and I was looking for a job. I interviewed with an insurance company, and they made me an offer that didn’t even come close to my salary history.

I said, “Thank you, but I made more money than this at my last job in Egypt.” They said, “Well, that was international, you can’t compare us to a poor developing nation on the other side of the world.”

Then I said, “Thanks again, but I made more money than this at the job before that in Alabama.” They said, “Well, that was aerospace. You can’t compare us to rocket science.”

That’s when I almost said, “Thanks, but I made more money than this at Captain D’s.” And their response might have been, “Well, that was fast food. You can’t compare us to fried fish.”

And so it goes with my reaction to Republicans defending Trump. I might say, “But you are choosing to ignore evidence he betrayed his oath of office, abused his power, obstructed justice and compromised our national security.” And they might respond, “Well, that’s Trump being Trump. You can’t compare that to being a good president.”

“But it’s your job to be impartial and help protect the country!”

“Well, that’s democracy. You can’t compare that to an opportunity to undo everything a black man did and stack the Supreme Court for decades to come.”

That’s the end of my political rant. Back to our regular retirement programming. Tune in next time to see if I continue with Netflix after my 30-day trial is over! What’s up with Grace & Frankie? And Outlander! Does the sex ever stop?

  1. I have sadly come to accept that his base is going to give him a pass on absolutely anything. I expect better of those taking an oath, but don’t see it happening. Strange times. For my sanity I’ve not followed the impeachment news too closely – I know how this ends.

    1. Yes, I don’t expect to share political posts very often, but this one was tugging at me. I think I got that out of my system. Back to Netflix.

  2. We all know how this ends. He gets away with murder. I actually think the Senate would find an excuse even for murder. They are an absolute embarrassment to our country. Anyone who still thinks Trump is great has got to have a few screws loose. Ugh. I understand why you do not want to slow down and watch this accident. No matter how he throws Obama under the bus, I will always think of him as a great statesman.

    1. I don’t really understand his need to undo everything Obama did. I also thought Obama was a great statesman.

  3. Dear Donna, what can I say, as an outsider and an apolitical person all my life. You do not live in a democracy and, if you think you do, then you get the government and the President you deserve! I have lived under several forms of ‘government’ in different parts of the world and my preferred in that time was a benevolent dictator, which is what I had when I lived in the United Arab Emirates. I even met the ruler and was impressed when he chose to ignore the safety rules when he visited our plant. Safety helmet? What was the chance of something dropping on his head? Silly Nanny State. You have squat chance of changing anything so Carpe Diem is the only way forward!

    1. Hi Alan – Well, wow, that’s a comment, all right. I figured this post would inspire some interesting feedback, and I thank you for making it so! Although I’m not quite ready to give up on the democratic ideal, I totally see your point and do my best to focus on Carpe Diem. It might be the only way to stay sane.

  4. Today was the Women’s March (although it was a rally, no marching involved), and I was heartened by the crowd and the speakers, particularly the 11 year old girl, the future, who spoke so eloquently. Gathering with like-minded people seems to be the antidote to my sometimes political ennui. Our legislature is in session, and I spend a lot of time at our capitol with signs and in hearings, mostly to no avail. Then I go home and watch Grace and Frankie on Netflix. 🙂

    1. I admire you for going and making your voice heard. And it sounds like you’ve found balance between hard work that seems hopeless and what entertains you in the moment.
